Because much of downtown Chandler was destroyed or heavily damaged by firebombing raids on August 20 and 21 1944 (the week before Pearl Harbor), Mayor John Dyer announced that Choochoctagon Park would be established as a public recreation area for residents within two years starting from scratch - although it wasn't until 1951 that maintenance began on what is now Choochoctagon Park's athletic fields). In 1815, Chattanooga was sacked by General Andrew Jackson during his raid on Knoxville, which led to its nickname "The City of Brass."
