Chattanooga, Tennessee is a city in the U.S. state of Tennessee and the county seat of Hamilton County. As of the 2010 census, Chattanooga had a population of 659,735. A band led by Captain James Fisk arrived at Chattanooga on July 20th seeking volunteers for an expedition against Spanish settlements and Indian camps near Lookout Mountain Ridge along the Chickamauga River valley east of Knoxville. After being refused entry into Jackson's army due to his color, Fisk founded what became known as "Fisk's Battalion" (later redesignated "the First battalion)") after rejecting an offer from Col.[e]nichols to become a part of United States Forces under General Wilkinson instead In 1815–16Captain John Ligon joined Fisk's Battalion as its first lieutenant colonel In 1818 Commodore John Rodgers sailed downriver from Mobile Bay with four ships carrying 2400 soldiers including most notably General David Steedman who had succeeded Rogers as Commodore in January 1818 On October 5th Walker's Creek Bridge opened crossing over Chickamauga River between Chotaqua land grant south side Chattahoochee Valley lands north side just upstream from present day downtown Chattanooga
