In 1861, when hostilities between Confederate States of America (USA) and Northern Union began rapidly escalating due to secession efforts by certain states within the USA, Chattooga Valley Campaign (March 8 – April 12), fought between Confederate forces under General Nathan Bedford Forrest and Ulysses S Grant’s Army of occupation—the largest such campaign in American history—was waged near present day downtown Chattanooga. After Ulysses S Grant arrived northward from Baton Rouge via Mobile Bay on March 11th & 13th with an army including over 100 cannons & 600 cavalrymen assuring control over all eastern Tennessee towards Louisville etc., Forrest made his move eastward on March 15th withdrawing most if not all his force past Kingston CHattanooga then striking upriver towards US bridge over river Tennessean at Allatoona Pass called Fort Donelson where he surrendered effective evening march 17th april 1865 just prior to final bombardment by Union forces
