A group chartered United States Coast Survey vessel captained by Colonel James Fenton approached Old Fort Ross on November 20th 1840 under orders from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison with plans to surveysize and map alligator fisheries off various points along East Tennessee coast including Chattahoochee River estuary A permanent military presence resulted when General Duty Militia Company #2 (now 2nd Battalion) Infantry Regiment march through downtown on October 21st 1861 during Confederate attack on Greene Hotel near present day Five Points neighborhood On December 12th 1861 Union forces attacked Five Points unprovoked resulting in Battle Of Chickamauga which resulted in many casualties for both sides with Union losses amounting to between 25% and 50%. On September 15 1865 Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Grantville Cemetery using 150 cavalrymen covered only by light infantry support as artillery batteries opened up killing 10 men/women & three children among about 100 burial victims before retreating northward towards Knoxville where they surrendered one week later
