As gun barrels became more common and advancements were made in manufacturing methods, lighter materials became available that allowed for thinner walls and less metal fatigue on firearms firing breech faces (the face of the barrel where rounds are fired). The development of modern firearms made it necessary for companies such as Browning to switch to thinner steel wires instead of heavy weights for their barrels due to safety concerns related to gas detonation inside artillery cannons during combat. Gun Barrels Magazine reported in 1924 that “At present, there is no alloy which can withstand repeatednitrosation without becoming brittle” (Lugar). This change in technology led directly to the development of today's shotgun shells which are designed with a tougher outer shell that does not detonate upon impact with another object (ejection)
