Many munitions manufacturers were located in or around Chattanooga, including Turner & Whitney, Knoxville Arsenal, and Westernaberger. Ammunition production continued during the Civil War based on demand from both Union and Confederate troops. The city became a major production center for firearms and artillery due to its location at one of several important manufacturing centers for these items on the Eastern seaboard. During World War I, ammunition production increased as America shifted from peacetime militaryemia to wartime production. Ammunition companies such as Winchester Repeating Arms Company, Remington Arms Company, American Munitions Company, Bethlehem Steel Corporation produced millions of rounds of ammunition across all wars. In 1945, after World War II ended and defeat came for Nazi Germany, much ammunition manufacturing left Chattanooga until postwar years when it resumed with a new emphasis on arms control purposes only marginally affecting projectile manufacturing within city limits

In 1898–1901, during the Spanish-American War, Chattanooga became an important naval base for United States Navy operations in Cuba. During World War II (1939-45), Chattanooga played an important role in the battle of Patton's Ridge. As part of Allied Forces Operation Market Time (the Normandy invasion), tanks and artillery fire pounded German positions at all hours during daylight on June 6th 1945 while supplies were being unloaded at shipyards adjacent to downtown Chattanooga along with other strategic locations around metro Atlanta
