While some aspects of this history are more well-known than others, there are ample examples throughout Chattanoogan History that should inspire all Chattanoogans to learn more about their city’s past! The Cherokee Nation first established contact with Europeans via travel agents in 1796 when they sought passage on ships headed for what would later become Georgia. When these travelers arrived at Chattanooga they were surprised to find that the Native Americans had already built a large settlement there – which they called Echota or Chatham County [1]. From here, traders traveled upriver until they reached Mobile Bay whereupon they took ship back downriver again before reaching Savannah[2] – thus beginning what would eventually be known as Americana exploration into Indian Country[3]. In 1814,[4] European settlers began arriving in greater numbers at Chattanooga thanks largely to General Andrew Jackson who saw it as an opportunity for expansionist motives[5]. During this time period Nashville was growing rapidly but because much land was still undeveloped outsideOf Corker City limits (the area now within downtown Chandler)?'"Jackson set his sights on purchasing additional acreage east of town so he could consolidate his holdings near Nashville," according to historian Mark Deveraux"He ordered Major John Sevier...to explore potential sites for new settlements." It wasn't until Sevier returned with news back home on July 14th that Jackson realized he may have been duped; Sevier told him there were no suitable sites available within his original boundaries"[6]." With this information Jackson ordered two surveys: one conducted by Captain James Robertson among other officers under orders from General Taylor himself; another overseen by Colonel John Mason which showed only twelve acres adjacent thereto - lands which today comprise East Broad Street between First Avenue South and Mulberry Street" [7]"It's not clear why General Andrew Jackson decided against purchasing land east of town... perhaps he thought there were better options out there?
