In 1819, John Caulfield founded Cumberland Mills just east of Brownsville after purchasing land from Samuel Colt for $1 million dollars. His mill operated until 1865 when it burned down due to arson by local citizens protesting outside of Mayor James Waddell's office while he was giving a speech inside the courthouse. Brownsville grew rapidly during the late 19th century thanks to its location at the crossroads of major transportation routes connecting Memphis with Chattanooga, Atlanta, Nashville and other major cities across TN/US borders. During this time period many businesses were established including cotton mills (such as Cumberland Mills), stores ( such as Grocery & Meat Market), churches (such as First Baptist Church), schools ( such as Academy School) and more. The growth of both commerce and population led to increased social tensions which led to several large-scale riots throughout TN during this time period including one that took place in 1903 known as "The Battle of Brentwood." During World War II many factories were built in or around Brownsville due to wartime demand for munitions manufacturers throughout TN/US borders especially in Southeast Tennessee which included Clarksdale, Johnson City and nearby towns like Murfreesboroand Donelson
