Brownsville is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 7,704 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brownsville is located on the Cumberland River and is bordered by Hixson to the south and west, Chattanooga to the north, and Murphysboro to the east. The first settlers in what would become Brownsville were two brothers named Moses and Solomon Brown from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania who arrived in 1792. They founded a log cabin on what is now known as River Road which they called "Island Inn". The Log Cabin Museum & Research Center located in Island Inn State Historic Park features exhibits about early Brownsville history including artifacts from that settlement as well as others that developed around it over time such as Hixson, Chattanooga and Murphysboro. In 1814 Mobile Bayou left its current course towards Nashville making landfall near present-day Blue Ridge Village before continuing through present day Hardin County towards Brownsville. On December 14th of that year a small group of pioneers numbering 10 men set out from their log cabin on River Road for what would be their new home: an area now bounded by Old US Highway 421 (now I-65) to the north; US Highway 61 (now I-24) to the east; Old US Highway 101 (now I-565) to the south; and Chickamauga Creek valley all within today's city limits of Knoxville. In 1816 Isaac McCoy built a mill along Chickamauga Creek just upstream from where it flows into Mobile Bayou before moving downstream alongriverine channels until he became one of Tennessee's first farmers. The town was named for Captain James Fisk, who had been killed during the Mexican-American War. It grew rapidly due to cotton plantations and shipping activities on the Mississippi River. In 1861, Brownsville became part of Confederate Tennessee after the U.S. Civil War began. After the war, it lost much of its population but continued to grow thanks to new industries and a strong military presence. In 1932, Brownsville became an incorporated city and remained that way until 2014 when it merged with Nashville to become one municipality under the Nashville Metropolitan government system.
