Brownsville is a city in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Brownsville is the county seat of Williamson County and home to the Brownsville Municipal Airport.
Brownsville is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro metropolitan area. Brownsville is located on the Cumberland River and has a population density of . The first permanent settler in Brownsville was James Fenton who built his home on what is now State Route 171 in 1800. By 1822, Fenton had two other homes in the town. In 1824-25, Hickory Pointe Baptist Church was built on land donated by John Brown and it became an important religious center for settlers in Hardin County. The church served as a school and post office from 1827 to 1840. In 1830, Brown's Rangers invaded Kentucky Territory and burned some stores and plantations nearpresent-day Brownsville; this event known as the Insurrection of 1830 (or "The Brownsville Raid"). This raid destroyed many homes and businesses in the community which later declined due to lack of business opportunities after statehood for Tennessee brought new economic opportunities to Hardin County. In 1839-40, New Life BaptistChurch was built across from present day Crossroads Mall off US 231 south of town on land donated by Isaac Asbury (1801-1876). From 1840 until 1861 when Union troops marched through Hardin County during the American Civil War occupying it as part of Confederate General Robert E Lee's army%, Brownsville remained largely unoccupied due to its strategic location between Nashville and Louisville making it an important supply depot for Confederate forces moving through these two cities. However, following Confederate defeat at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865, most citizens fled or were forced out when Union troops burned all their homes within sight of their settlements while they themselves remained largely unscathed save for minor damage done to several buildings including one house that still stands today used by local schools as a museum storage unit

Brownsville was founded in 1827 by Colonel John Brown and his family. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who had fought in the Mexican-American War as a colonel. The town was originally a small settlement on the old Tennessee River, but it grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the Mississippi River. In 1837, Brownsville became an official town in the Confederate States of America. During World War II, Brownsville was one of five cities that were bombed by American planes during the Battle of Midway. The city is now known for its annual "Brownsville BBQ" festival which attracts thousands of visitors each year.

In 1814, the Treaty of San Jacinto ended the Mexican-American War and made Texas an independent republic. The town began to grow as a result of this event, but dwindled when the Republic became extinct in 1821. Brownsville was again founded by settlers in 1870 after the American Civil War ended. It remained a small community until the 1970s when it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to Chattanooga, Tennessee and its status as a transport hub for goods entering and leaving Chattanooga Steel Belt industries
