Brownsville, Tennessee is a small town located in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–Foley Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brownsville is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and about 15 miles east of Chattanooga. The first people to live in what is now Brownsville were Cherokee Indians. They arrived in 1795 and made their home near present-day Greeneville. In 1819, James Fenton founded a trading post at what is now known as Brownstown on the riverbank opposite present-day downtown Brownsville. The Post continued to be active until it closed in 1865 due to lack of traffic. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell established a headquarters camp within striking distance of Brownsville for his army during the Civil War. When Union General Ulysses S. Grant moved his army northward from Chattanooga towards Knoxville in December 1862, Ewell ordered his cavalrymen to cross over the Chattahoochee and attack Grant's forces from behind. The attack failed and Union forces withdrew back into Chattanooga without encountering any serious opposition from local militiamen or Confederate defenders. Brownsville was incorporated as a city in 1907 and grew rapidly with construction throughout World War II including an airfield named after US President Franklin D Roosevelt which served as primary supply base for American bombers bombing Nazi Germany during WWII Additionally, there was significant growth following World War II with new housing developments being built all around town including one called "The Strip" which spanned six blocks between Prospect Avenue and Elm Street across from today's City Hall buildingCompleted in 1954 adjacent to then-Federal Courthouse was one of largest single development ever undertaken outside of urban areas during that period During this time many manufacturing plants relocated to Brownsville such as Goodrich Tire & Rubber Company (now Tyvek) which opened its first factory here in 1951; P&O Paper Products also set up shop here before moving operations downstream later that same year to Memphis TN In 1972/1973 both companies merged creating American Paper Products Incorporated which remain headquartered here today

Brownsville is a town in Rutherford County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It was founded by General James W. Knox in 1824 as the town of Knoxville Landing on the Cumberland River. The name derives from "brownsville" meaning "shoreline of salt water." The first post office in Brownsville was established in 1827, and it changed its name to Knoxville in 1829. In 1830, the community had a population of 375 and a schoolhouse. A courthouse and jail were erected in 1834; they were replaced by the present courthouse and jail in 1903. In 1840, Brownsville became an organized village with a government under Mayor John Hogg. On July 8, 1850, it united with nearby Chattanooga to form the new city of Chattanooga (incorporating all of Rutherford County). The first mayor of this new city was Elisha Denny Sr.. In 1861–1865, during the American Civil War (the Union war), Brownsville served as one of Confederate forces' main supply points for food and ammunition upriver from Chattanooga. By 1865, however, Brown's Landing had become known as "the most important Confederate stronghold on the Cumberland River," because it furnished more than two-thirds of all supplies entering into or leaving Chattanooga from that point onward. After the war ended, BrownsVILLE reverted back to its original name: Knoxville Landing/Blacksburg until 1870 when it again reverted to its original spelling: Brownstown/Blacksburg until 1901 when it became Blacksburg/Brownstown once again
