Brownsville rifle scopes have a long and varied history in the Tennessee Valley. Prior to the 1800s, rifles were used for hunting game in what is now Brownsville. The first rifle scope was made by David Wilkinson in 1792. Rifle scopes began to be produced commercially in 1827, when Isaac Aspinwall erected the first sawmill in Brownsville. The first rifle scope designed specifically for target shooting was built by Wm. Fenton of Knoxville in 1854. In 1865, Jno. Cramer of Chattanooga developed a new type of rifle scope that combined features from both the Wilkinson and Aspinwall scopes. This new scope became known as the Cramer Scope. In 1872, Amos Brown built his first muzzleloader shop in Brownsville, which remained an important center for gunsmithing until the late 19th century. From this workshop, Brown also manufactured rifles and shotguns with adjustable sights and magnification capabilities up to 25x or 100x! In 1876-77, he constructed a large metal printing press at his shop that became one of the most famous presses in America! Brown's presses continued to be used into the 20th century; examples are still extant today at The Franklin County Historical Society Museum (Franklin County TN).
Brownsville is a city located in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 12,539 at the 2010 census. Brownsville is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The commercial center of Brownsville is located on I-75 and US-431, while the residential areas are spread out along the north side of the river. The first mention of Brownsville was in 1811 when James Farish reported finding "a postern gate open within six rods [of] us" and noting that it had been closed by the Creek Indians. In 1822 John Cordon noted "a large Indian town lying on our right bank about two miles distant from us". A year later he said "it is not more than a day's journey by boat to Chattanooga". In 1836, General Andrew Jackson made his headquarters at Cross Timbers in what is now Chattanooga during his campaign for president. He ordered General John A. Campbell to move all troops from Knoxville to Cross Timbers so that they could be used for this purpose. When Campbell learned about this order he decided against it and instead moved troops back to Knoxville. However, before he could do so another order arrived ordering him to move all troops eastward across Tennessee into Alabama for protection from Indian attacks. So as not to offend Jackson Campbell reassembled his command at Cross Timbers and continued moving supplies upriver until July 2, 1837 when he reached Muscle Shoals and camped thereuntil relieved by General Polk's army on July 3rd near Big Muddy River Bridge just south ofpresentday Memphis). When Nashville became an American city in 1795 it passed through Hardin County into what is now contiguous Williamson County - including Brownsville - but it appears that no record exists specifying how or when Brownstown got its name (or if indeed any such thing did happen). One story has it that early settler Captains Hawkins and Witherspoon discovered oil reserves around Brownsville Lake which led them to adopt this naming choice; however other sources claim that one account says Colonel Hugh Garrett mentioned visiting Mobile Bay while on a military expedition headed towards Pensacola in 1794 and happened upon several Spanish ships anchored off Mobile Bay; upon spotting them he called out "Viva Mexico!" which may have inspired someone aboard one of the ships to reply with their own version of this slogan – eventually becoming known as "Minty Green" after nearby Depot Square in downtown Mobile – thus starting the tradition today!

By 1920, however, it had shrunk to its current size. The town experienced another period of growth during World War II until its destruction by fire in 1945. Since then, Brownsville has slowly regained its former importance as a rural community with limited access to amenities such as education and industry.
