Brownsville is a small town located in Jackson County, Tennessee. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brownsville is bordered by Cooke City to the east, Antioch to the north, and Lebanon to the west. The first Europeans to visit Brownsville were French traders in 1692. The Dutch also traded here for a time in the 17th century before moving on. In 1813, General Andrew Jackson's army destroyed Fort Donelson in what is now Nashville after refusing surrendered without battle. After this victory, General Jackson named Brownsville as his new headquarters for operations in central Tennessee. In 1830, Colonel James McMicken built a log cabin on what is now Second Street near today's Old Hickory Boulevard. This became home to many early settlers such as John Burnet and Ebenezer Blackburne who founded Blackburne Creek Township within Brownsvilles limits about 1850-1860. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Brownsville when it was incorporated as a town under the name of "Nashvil". In 1865-1866 two devastating hurricanes struck Tennessee; one killed more than $1 million worth of crops and businesses while another caused extensive damage across much of Middle Tennessee including Brownsvilles downtown district which was completely destroyed by floodwaters three days later during Hurricane Edwin. After these natural disasters several reconstruction efforts took place with help from United States government agencies such as WPA (Works Progress Administration). A major effort occurred during World War II when vast amounts of resources were brought into use to rebuild northern Tennessee cities devastated by bombing raids from Japan including Brownsville which saw an increase in population from 1945 untilactivated Korean War military housing projects ended no later than 1973 due largely to budget cuts resulting from Vietnam War hostilities that began just prior to its termination

Brownsville is a town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,876 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. Brownsville was founded in 1837 by Captain John Brown and his family. The name "Brownsville" came from the Cherokee word meaning "place of brown corn." The first store in Brownsville was built on what is now Elm Street in 1838. By 1850, there were three stores and two blacksmiths in Brownsville. In 1857, General James Hogg established a military post near Brownsville and purchased land for it. He named the post Fort Hogg. The first school in Brownsville was built in 1857 by Mrs. Jane Goodloe Foster and taught school until 1865 when it became known as the First Baptist Female School. In 1861, Confederate General John Custer stationed his army at Fort Hogg to prevent Union forces from entering Tennessee between Chattanooga and Knoxvillle[1]. On July 8th, 1861, Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest arrived at Fort Hogg with 10 miles of artillery to assist Custer's army[2]. Three days later on July 10th,[3], Confederate Brigadier General A S Hill advanced against Union forces under Lieutenant Colonel Thomas J McNairy at Lookout Mountain[4][5] After a long day's fighting that saw more than one hundred casualties among both sides,[6], Hill emerged victorious over McNairy's outnumbered force[7] With this success came an invitation for LtCol A S Hill to lead a brigade into battle against Ulysses S Grant's advancing forces opposing Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia through Chattanooga.[8] Aftermath: On July 14th 1862,[9], Union soldiers burned down Brownsvilles church after learning that Captain John Brown had sheltered Rebel prisoners during their fight for independence from Great Britain[10]. Captain John Brown died as a result of his wounds received during this skirmish (he was only thirty-six years old). This event led to increased tension between pro-Unionists and anti-Rebels throughout Marshall County which would culminate with the Battle of Chickamauga two years later
The Brownsville, Tennessee area was settled by the Cherokee in the 1830s. The area became a part of the Union in 1861 after the American Civil War. In 1881, it was organized as a city and named for Major General James A. Brown, who had been killed in action during the Mexican-American War.
