In 1911, Brown County pistol owner William Hartsfield started manufacturing his own magazine pistols using American-made Ruger 10/22 rifle rounds. These handguns were known as Hartsfield Model 1’s. One of the first things that Hartsfield did when he began production of these magazines was to start offering them at a discounted price to NRA members only. This program lasted until 1912 when NRA discontinued operations with Hartsfield’s factory because of World War I restrictions on firearm production. Hartsfield continued manufacture of his own magazines well into the 1920s but ceased operations again after the stock market crash in 1929 due to Congressional prohibition on firearms sales during that time period After World War II ended, many gun owners turned to reloading their old ammunition for their new weapons instead of buying fresh rounds from manufacturers like Colt or Winchester anymore. This led to the rise of reloading magazines as a major industry in Brownsville over the next few decades One such reloading magazine company was Frank Stroud’s Sons Incorporated which operated out of Brown County from 1951-1975 During this time period, Frank Stroud also manufactured both 1911 handgun pistols and .22LR rifle cartridges . Most importantly however, Frank Stroud's Sons Incorporated became oneofthe biggest proponents and distributors of reloadable ammo products in America due to their massive stockpile of pre-war vintage ammunition
