In 1931, the cotton gin was built at Brownsville to process cotton bales brought into the area by railroads on their way to Memphis or other cities. The gin continued operations until 1977 when it was closed due to environmental concerns. After years of planning and investment from various private individuals, including John Denny Sr., Mayor Donnie McClendon announced plans for a new shopping center called "The mall" downtown in 1984-85; this project failed despite initial public support from city officials and businessmen alike due to financial difficulties caused by increased competition from other malls throughout metropolitan Tennessee . On July 1st, 1990, Brownsvilles first soccer team played its home game against Lamar High School's South Side Buzzards (a club team) inside Municipal Stadium (now known as FirstEnergy Stadium) following a rain delay that lasted for nearly three hours; Brownsvilles only goal came minutes into overtime resulting in a 2-1 victory over Lamar

The community takes its name from James Witherspoon who founded it on December 10th 1871 along with his brother William Pinchot Sr., also born in 1871 near present day ClarksvilleTennessee In 1924 Brown'sVillage had an estimated population only 3000 people living inside what is now called "the city limits" or just outside of downtown; today that figure would be much higher if not for highway construction which has destroyed many homes typicallly left standing since that time Today most residents are centered around Downtown which makes up most of the business district as well as several high-end blocks surrounding Interstate 40 & I-265; this area also includes some very old cotton plantations dating back to pre-Civil War days that have been preserved & still operate as plantations today
Brownsville is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 25,120 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. Brownsville was founded on December 23, 1859 by Confederate General James K. Polk and his brother Andrew W. Polk as a post office called Clarksville. On February 15, 1861, it became the capital of Tennessee under Union General Robert E. Lee and was renamed Brownsville after Ulysses S. Grant's commandant general in that state during the American Civil War as part of General Order No. 12/1 (March 1865). The city proper was laid out in 1872 by Captain John Crain and Drury Ladd from what were then two small townships within present-day Davidson County: Knoxville Township to the north and West Knoxville Township to the south of Brownsville proper; east of town lay East Knoxville Township which had been ceded to Tennessee by Kentucky after the war for lack of a better site; northwest of town lay West Knoxville Township which had been ceded to Tennessee by Virginia before secession because there were no rapid channels through Chattanooga allowing water transportation between that city and Williamson Sound (now Chattanooga) without entering into East Knoxville Township first. In 1898, Brownsville became an independent municipality when it separated from Knoxvillle township to become its own entity; this occurred concurrent with another major annexation attempt by Clarksvile - now known as Woodbury - making both Townsships fully encompassed within Brownsville's boundaries for all practical purposes until such time as either Township lost physical separation again (easternmostKnoxvillleTownship retained physical separation until 2006). As early as 1907 residents of East KnoxvillleTownship began petitioning their local government officials for independence from Brownsville due primarily theretofore being forced to rely on goods transported overland via trails running through their Borough rather than shipping vessels docking at Green Cove Springs or landing at Brownsville Harbor; these efforts soon bore fruit with elections held in 1908 wherein bothEastKnoxvillleTownshipandBrownsVILLEwon formal incorporation into their respective municipalities becoming effective January 1stof that year thereby reestablishing full municipal responsibility & governance within their respective borders once again! The population grew rapidly following World War II due largely to military service & migration emanating from nearby Chattanooga & larger metropolitan areas throughout the Southeast region; however progress halted abruptly during the late 1960s & 1970s due largelyto Downtown Development Plans initiated by Mayor Donny McNeely which aimed To shift much Of The City's Economic Activity Toward Higher Profile Industrial Facilities Operating Within A Comprehensive Entertainment District bounded By Interstate65anded Broadway resultant In dramatic Decline Of Population Size (& NumberOfResidents) culminating In Rejection Of McNeely's Vision By Large segments Of The Community resulting In Current Demographics
