Brownsville is a small town in Johnson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. Brownsville was founded in 1827 as a post office called "Hawk's Nest". The name means "place where hawks live." In 1868, it became the capital of Johnson County and still retains that role today. It has been known for its produce and livestock markets since before Reconstruction ended in 1865. Brownsville also served as an important location during the American Civil War because it was near Confederate lines and had access to munitions and food supplies. The first courthouse in Brownsville was built in 1828 on what is now US-411 north of where present-day US-411 intersects I-40. This courthouse housed the court system for both Jackson and Johnson Counties until 1861 when Jackson County moved its court to Nashville due to political pressure from Central Tennessee politicians looking to avoid being drawn into the war on the side of the Confederacy. In 1865, Union forces burned down this courthouse during their occupation of Brownsville following General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Battle of Corinth which helped win Ulysses S. Grant's battle against Sherman at Perrysburg Heights (known today as Harrison Ford Park). In 1865, Brownsville also saw much action during Reconstruction when many new residents came from Alabama seeking freedom from pro-segregationist policies back home. Many soldiers who had found homes here after fighting for Southern independence were turned back by Jim Crow laws in Mississippi so they took up residence in Brownsville instead seeking opportunity and better opportunities than they could find south of Memphis or Birmingham – experiences that would help shape many future leaders including Barack Obama Sr., current President Donald Trump Jr., Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) and civil rights leader Dr.-eyal Alito Jr.). Brownsvilles Main Street still bears evidence of this period with businesses such as groceries stores, banks, theaters and more all having opened up within those years leading up to World War II when most heavy industry moved out East due to wartime production restrictions set by Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal agenda which aimed to improve working class living conditions across America while avoiding another world war. Many people have fought for or against various causes throughout history including communism / socialism, fascism / Nazism etc., but no one has done more work & sacrificed more blood & treasure than local native son George Washingtons father did as Mayor of Cleveland TN during WWII - he singlehandedly raised over $14 million dollars towards helping his hometown become safe again after being bombed by Japan two nights earlier! Mayor Washington even got himself captured by Japanese forces just long enough for locals (& Americans) to gather money & build a hospital complex — something unheard of back then! AfterWWII ended & Cleveland reverted back to normalcy - Mayor Washington passed away at age 94 leaving behind an unfinished legacy!!
