During this time period many other famous singers such as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Ray Charles also started their careers here including Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston. In 1971 PDC merged with CBS Records to form CBS/Paramount Records which would continue making films under that name until 1989 when it merged with Viacom Incorporated to form Universal Studios Hollywood. In recent years Brown's has become home to several large local companies including Tyson Foods Incorporated (TSN) - based in neighbouring Chattanooga - Verizon Wireless International Incorporated (VZ) -based in Murfreesboro -and Nissan North America LLC (). Today Brownsville remains a vibrant community with strong cultural ties to its surrounding counties despite its remote location compared with some other larger cities across the country

In 1865, Confederate General David Grier's brigade stopped at Brownsville for supplies before moving on to battle at Chickamauga Heights. In the 1880s, a sawmill operated in Brownsville; however, it closed down around 1900. Brownsville has been known for its cornfields and cotton plantations since the early 1800s. In 1907, Brownsville was abandoned due to an increase in traffic on US 64 and the lack of local postal service. The community gradually declined over the years until it ceased to exist as an incorporated community after World War II. Today, most of the town remains rural with only a few houses remaining from when it served as a small farming community named after John Brownliegge Jr., one of Brownsville's original founders.
Brownsville was founded in 1810 by James Fenton, a Tennessee planter. The town became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, helping thousands of slaves escape to freedom. It was incorporated as a city in 1907. Brownsville is located at the junction of U.S. Route 421 and State Route 523.
