Brownsville is a city in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Williamson County. Brownsville was founded on May 6, 1836 by Captain James Caldwell and his band of Creek militia led by Colonel John Baptiste Covington as part of the Cherokee War.[1][2] The first post office in Brownsville was established on December 3, 1839. On October 5, 1840, the town received its charter from GovernorJames Ketchum. The original name for the town was "Creektown". In 1860, when Brownsville became an independent city it again changed its name to "Brownsville" after General Andrew Johnson became president of the United States and ordered all federal holidays to be celebrated as national holidays instead of local ones. As a result of this change in government policy, many older residents continued to call their former town "Creektown." The city has experienced rapid growth over recent decades due to its location near I-40 and other major highways. Brownsville is a town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. Brownsville is named after General Andrew Jackson and his army's march through the valley in 1812 during the War of 1812. The town was founded by Colonel James Fenton in 1814 as a post office on an old Indian village site called Kincaid's Landing. In 1819, Fenton built what became known as Brown's Ferry Dam to provide water for his millstream that ran through the town. The first store opened in 1830, and a cotton gin followed in 1835. Brownsville developed into a small farming community with plantations until World War II when it became an important manufacturing center for munitions companies such as Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. After the war, many factories closed down and residents lost their jobs; however, some have restored their businesses since then. In recent years, Brownsville has become home to several smaller businesses that support its high-quality education system which offers undergraduate degrees from more than 100 colleges and universities within one mile of downtown. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land。 As of the census of 2010, there were 1,711 people residing in the town: 753 male/female/non-Hispanic white/black (94%); 256 Hispanic (10%); 10% black or African American ancestry; 0% Native American; 5% Asian; 2% Pacific Islander ancestry.; 3% from other races; 11% from two or more races (); 8% were Catholic ; 4% Protestant ; 5%-6%.As of 2000,[2] there were 673 housing units out of which 88 had been occupied by owner occupants vacant units while 133 had been rented Units Owned By renters outnumbered Units Occupied By occupant landlords 4 to 1

However, due to its location upstream from Nashville and other major cities, it experienced significant economic decline by the late 19th century until it regained some importance as a developing community in 1925 when it was made part of Nashville through annexation by that city. Today, Brownsville is still considered an important cultural and commercial center within Nashville with several popular tourist attractions such as its historic courthouse complex which remains active today as a museum or convention center; its riverfront park which features wide open spaces perfect for playing baseball or basketball; and its namesake bridge which crosses Broadway just south of downtown Nashville
