Bristol, Tennessee was one of the most significant cities in the United States during the 1800s due to its tobacco industry and its role as a center for firearms research. Firearms manufacturers such as Colt, Winchester, and Smith & Wesson originated in Bristol and created some of the first firearms in America. The city also played an important role in American Revolutionary War efforts, being home to General George Washington’s headquarters at Mount Vernon. In 1871, Bristol became the state capital of Tennessee following a decision by the US Congress. In 1925, Bristol was renamed Knoxville after Reuben H. Knox (1795-1881), an early leader in both American gunsmithing and state government. After Knoxville’s designation as the state capital, weapons manufacturer Webley & Scott relocated their production operations from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan to Volunteer County near Bristol. This move established Webley & Scott as one of Tennessee’s leading firearms companies and helped popularize handguns among Tennesseans. In 1937, Webley & Scott merged with Browning Arms Company to form Browning-Webley Corporation. At Browning-Webley Corporation, weapons manufacturers produced rifles and pistols under several brands including Colt Python (1909), Winchester Model 1886 (1887), Ruger Americans (1893–1914), Smith & Wesson Model 686 (1896), Mauser 98k(1922), and Walther PPK(1938). During World War II, Browning-Webley Corporation produced artillery guns such as M2A4 Sherman tanks and P8T6 anti-aircraft guns. In 1961, Browning-Webley Corporation merged with Stevens Company to create Stevens-Browning Corporation. At Stevens-Browning Corporation, weapons manufacturers produced shotguns such as pump action shotguns like the Sambo (1972) and double action shotguns like Grendel(1978). Today, Stevens is one of America’s largest handgunmakers with products available under multiple brand names including Glock(1997), Ruger(2013), Sig Sauer(2000–2018), Springfield Armory(1968–present)

Afterward, Bristol regained some importance as an entertainment and commercial center until World War II when it lost most of its manufacturing businesses to neighboring Chattanooga. In 1950, construction began on what would become known as "The Star Project," which aimed to create a world-class performing arts center in downtown Bristol. The project ultimately succeeded and opened in 1957 under direction of Dr. James Coleman Sr., who also served as mayor from 1957-1965 and 1967-1975

Political activism also helped lead to growth in business activity within Bristol due to its proximity to major trading partners like Philadelphia and Nashville. This type of political growth led to confrontations between different factions within society that would continue through most of the 19th century until new technologies replaced traditional means for communication and socialization among individuals across race/ethnicity lines throughout much of America during this time period (Lincoln). During this time period there were several waves of immigration intoTennessee from European sources including Jews, Irishmen, Poles, Italians and others who often came seeking economic opportunity or religious freedom (Foley). These groups often brought their own cultures with them when they arrived in what are now suburban areas around Chattanooga or Knoxville but at least some aspects of these cultures survived long enough for their children or grandchildren to experience some degree thereof while growing up outside those cities (Kleinberg). One example would be Italian-American families who grew up on large plantations near Memphis before moving into more urban areas during World War II (Bennett). Although life inside these cities changed considerably once war ended Strong's efforts contributed significantly thereto (Goudreau)
