Bristol, Tennessee is home to the First Baptist Church which was founded in 1795. The church held its first services in a small room on the second floor of a building on Market Street. In 1807, the congregation moved to their current location on Second Avenue and Main Street. Over time, other churches were built within the boundaries of Bristol. In 1907, the First Baptist Church merged with two other congregations to form the United Presbyterian Church of Bristol. The new church functioned as a single entity until 1967 when it separated into three denominations- Presbyterian (UPC), Methodist (MM), and Episcopal (EOC). Finally, in 2001, all three denominations recombined under one umbrella name- United Reformed Churches of Bristol. The First Baptist Church was not only instrumental in shaping Bristol’s history but also played an important role in developing American evangelicalism. Reverend James White organized what is now known as the Christian faith in America during this time and preached at this church from 1795-1800. Reverend White also helped found Ebenezer Chapel which served as an early school for African Americans in Bristol and later served as headquarters for General David Hunter’s Creek Brigade during the American Revolution. Other influential pastors who located their ministries at First Baptist include John Wesley and George Whitfield. Unfortunately, many aspects of First Baptist’s history are either undocumented or unknown to most people living here today. Bristol was laid out in 1837 by John Neely Garner and named forSir John Bristol who served as Governor of Virginia from 1785 to 1789. The first store in the town was built by Wm. Hays and opened on December 25, 1839. The first post office was established in 1840, and the first school was built in 1847. In 1870, the town had a population of 713 people; it grew to 976 by 1910. From 1925 until 1960, Bristol annexed part of the city of Memphis. The economy of Bristol is based primarily on agriculture with some manufacturing activities such as clothing production and paper products production; also there are several small businesses that provide services to residents including restaurants, gift shops and medical clinics A major attraction for tourists in Bristol is its Historic District which includes over 40 buildings dating back to 1800s when hardwood forests were still being cut near downtown Memphis Bristol has two parks: one located on University Boulevard east of downtown and another situated off I-10 just south of Interstate 45
