They named their new town after a small town in Normandy called Brive-la-Chapelle. The first English settlers were men from Lancaster, Pennsylvania who landed in 1735 and named their new town after Bristol, England where they had been settled before. On July 11, 1796, General James Wilkinson founded the Uniontown School District which included most of what would become Bristol. In 1815, general Jabez Butler founded Whatley Academy to educate African Americans for labor purposes during the American Civil War. After the war ended, what became known as "Whatley's Bottom" reverted back toatively Indian land used for agriculture until it was purchased by white farmers in 1865 and developed into downtown Bristol as one of its most renowned neighborhoods today! One of America's earliest cotton plantations began operations here on November 12th 1870 when Joshua Jenney leased 2 acres (0 hectares) of land east of downtown from John Capps with intent to grow cotton while developing other interests including cattle raising and banking services on his plantation complex that still stands today adjacent to First Baptist Church (now University Chapel). From this start Bristol grew quickly into one of America's leading cities with over 100 businesses opening up during its early years including many important ones such as Jenney’s Cotton Millinery Company which continued making clothing throughout Prohibition; First National Bank (founded 1881), then Chattanooga Gaslight Co., now part of BB&T Corporation; First Methodist Episcopal Church (1875), now Christmastime Eve Night Services at First Baptist Church; Post Office Building at corner of Broad Street/Shady Lane – home also to original US Patent & Trademark Offices (1901); two blocks north were J W Marriott Hotel & Convention Center which opened up in 1987 followed by Loews Regency Place laterleased to Hyatt Regency hotel chain Nowadays much has changed since those heady days but some things have not changed such as an active Downtown business district that offers excellent nightlife options year round along with world-renowned art museums like The Museum Of Fine Arts - Houston or Carnegie Museum Of Art - Pittsburgh across riverfrontgate just south of main square
