After the war ended, many residents moved away from Bristol because Reconstruction policies in America favored white over black citizens and businesses were not opened to mulatto or other non-white traffic until after World War II.] The Town Hall building was built in 1898 and is currently used as a library.[1] The oldest store still operating in town (established 1892) is now known as "The Gilded Cage".[2] On October 15th 1904 Mayor J C Wilkinson delivered an address before a crowd estimated at 2500 people about plans for Progress Park which would include athletic fields and a movie theater;[3] however no such park ever materialized.[4][5][6] In 1959–1960 two new schools were erected: one on Main Street east side and one on Church Street west side just across from each other;[7][8][9][10] these schools are now known as Bristow Middle School and Bristow High School respectively. In 1998 three buildings on Broad Street near Depot Square were destroyed by fire;[11][12][13] these buildings are now known as First Baptist Church (1899), Second BaptistChurch (1901), and Third PresbyterianChurch (1904). During World War II several munitions plants operated within walking distance including Bendix Corporation plant on Monument Road north side which manufactured tanks,[14] Wacoal Corporation plant on Halls Avenue south side which manufactured artillery shells,[15],[16], Valley Forge Arsenal Plant #2(now Knob Hill Arsenal National Military Park)[17],[18], and Radford Army Ammunition Plant#1(now National Steel Strike Force Plant)[19]; all within easy reach for civilians living nearby who worked at these plants
