Grant. In 1870, Bristol merchants formed the First National Bank of Bristol which became one of the largest banks in America until it merged into Jardine & Mathews Incorporated in 1986. In 1892, Nathan Bedford Forrest founded his Ku Klux Klan chapter in Bristol and continued to operate it until he was banned from South Carolina by Governor Beattie Bullitt during Reconstruction Period (1896-1927).
