Bristol, Tennessee is located in the eastern part of the state of Tennessee. It is bordered by Marshall County to the south, Mockingbird County to the west, and Hardin County to the north. The city of Bristol was founded on February 9, 1814 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. At that time, it was called Hartsville. Bristol became an incorporated town on October 5, 1836. The population of Bristol grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s as people moved into the area from Kentucky and other states in search of new opportunities. In 1860, when Tennessean editor John Fenton published an article about slavery in Tennessee he named Bristol one of several slave-holding towns in that state. During the American Civil War (1861–1865), Bristol was part of Confederate forces and pro-Unionists. On April 14, 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early led a incursion into Union territory east of Nashville and attacked two Union forts at Battle Hill near Athens. The attack killed five Union officers and wounded more than twenty others before being repulsed with heavy losses for which Early was later tried and convicted at Camp Sumter Court House in Charleston, South Carolina. Because of this attack on Union forces in central Tennessee (and also because many residents were southern sympathizers), Bristols pro-union sentiment waned after 1865 until finally disappearing altogether during Reconstruction (1868–1912). In 1870 while still classified as an unincorporated community byTennessee law (), Bristols voters approved a municipal charter granting it full city status under what is known as "The Second Charter Amendment." From then until 1901 (the year local government decentralization began), Bristols operated as a separate municipality within Marshall County with its own mayor and City Council but always maintaining close ties to its larger neighbor inside Knox County; both cities shared similar landmarks such as Market Square/City Hall (), State Capitol building (), Mayor's office (), newspapers () & parks (). After Redevelopment began in earnest starting around 1901 however things changed again: Mayor Harold Cagle decided to merge his two cities back together into one bigger entity - much like how Chattanooga had done a few years earlier - now called "Bristol Township". However following some public opposition this decision soon faced pushback from certain quarters who saw it as another exampleof ceding control over their small town back to outside interests (); ultimately voting against merger 2/3rds against with only 1/3 actually present! This events lead directly to Mayor Cagle resigning amidst much criticism just 2 months after taking office (& leaving behind a city filled mostly with former Councillors & lobbyists!). Although not without controversy or loss ($100K+ budget surplus within 2 years!), overall merger has been seen by some locals as Pros wins over Cons due to increased governance efficiency & overall sense of community service provided despite limited resources
