Gun parts history in Bristol, Tennessee started with the purchase of a shotgun in 1855. The man who made that purchase was Absalom Smith and his brother-in-law, Amos Long. From that shotgun purchase until 1865, there were only six different shotguns made in Bristol! In 1865, Absalom Smith bought a Repeating Arms Company rifle from W.H. Scattering Eagle of Knoxville. This rifle allowed him to start manufacturing handguns as well! That same year, he also acquired a pistol from Logan & Tillinghast of Nashville. This new gun allowed him to become the first handgun maker in Bristol! For the next fifteen years, Absalom Smith produced firearms for many local residents including both law enforcement and civilian use. In 1879, Absalom Smith passed away and his son Solomon took over production at the company. After Solomon died in 1901, production continued by two other sons before it finally stopped in 1905 due to financial reasons. In 1934, Gun Owners Against Crime Incorporated purchasedAbsalomSmith Firearms from their family members and continues production today!

In addition to its namesake bank (the first being a savings bank), other notable banks located in or near town include Fifth Third Bancorp (), Regions Financial Corporation () and JPMorgan Chase & Co.. Other major retailers include JCPenney (), Macy's (), Sears () and Walmart (). Major employers within town are Adobe Systems Inc., FedEx ground transportation company (), UTHealth System Knoxville () and Tyson Foods Incorporated ().
