The first gun mag was published in 1836 by Captain John S. Williamson of the U.S. Naval Volunteer Reserve and Lieutenant George Prentice of the British Army's Royal Irish Constabulary Regiment. They were both volunteers who had enlisted in the Navy to carry rifles for use against pirates. The first issue of these magazines featured 20 issues each, with 8 pages per issue. In 1857, Captains Ayer and Tilton published "Guns Illustrated" which became a national magazine series with over 100 issues published between 1858-1887 inclusive. The popularity of this magazine led to other publishers entering into the field such as Davenport & Company who produced "Gun World" from 1888-1915 and Henschel & Co., Ltd., who produced "National Rifleman" from 1916-1945
Bristol, Tennessee is a small town in Sevier County, Tennessee. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. Bristol was founded in 1844 by James Addison and named for Bristol, England. The first settlers in Bristol were farmers who came from Virginia and Kentucky. They built their homes on land that now includes the neighborhoods of Easton, Hickory Hill, Nashua Hills and Westmoreland Hills. In 1845, two brothers by the name of Cook arrived in Bristol from Illinois with their families. Cook started a blacksmith shop and later became mayor of Bristol. He also donated land to make Glasgow Elementary School possible. Bristol's growth continued through the 1850s when merchants began to come to the community to buy goods necessary for daily life such as breadfruit trees, eggs and butterfat candles. In 1857, Mayor Cook sold his interest in the school system to John Witherspoon who developed it into what is known today as Baylor University which opened its doors on October 9th of that year. That same year also saw construction start on what would become Post Office Square which currently houses many businesses including The KFC restaurant and BP gas station In 1861, Confederate soldiers occupied local plantations causing much destruction but also leading to an influx of new settlers who founded churches and schools in response tothe plight of those who had lost their homes or crops during the war. One such family was The Rankins who moved from Yorktown Heights in New York City after fighting alongside General Robert Ewell during battles around Chattanooga " rankin's grocery store" still stands today near Post Office Square
Bristol, Tennessee was founded in 1821 by James Robertson and became a city in 1832. The town was named for the Bristol River, which ran through it. It had a population of about 100 people when it was founded and grew to more than 200 by 1840. In 1865, the Union Pacific Railroad came to Bristol and changed the name from "Bristol" to "Chicago, Illinois."
