Bristol, Tennessee is a small town in the Sevier County area of central Tennessee. It was founded in 1851 by General David G. Cooke and named for Bristol, England. The population of Bristol was 1,564 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Bristol was established on May 10, 1853. The first settler in Bristol was James Binkley, who arrived in 1851 from Kentucky. In 1860, two other men - John Pritchard and James Goode - also settled in Bristol and opened a general store. By 1870, there were ten residents living in Bristol; by 1900 it had grown to twenty-one residents. In 1861, General David G Cooke moved his family to Sevier County from Harper's Ferry, Virginia after the American Civil War concluded. He became an officer with the Confederate States Army and fought against Union forces during the war. On October 17, 1871 he married Miss Emily Silliphant of Nashville and they started a home here that still stands today within sight of Interstate 40 (the present day exit number 68). They raised four children here:David Jr., Edwin Vail Jr., Florence Welch Richardson IV (born December 12th 1946) and John Quincy Adams Cooke III (born November 9th 1951). In 1865 General David G Cooke enlisted as a private soldier with Company K 2nd Tennessee Infantry Regiment Alabama State Guard Cavalry Regiment under command of Colonel Treadwell at Chickamauga Campaign where he lost both his parents died suddenly on September 15th 1862 near Montero Bridge over AP Bush River near Chattanooga National Military Park Cemetery Chattanooga TN 4 days before Emancipation Proclamation effective date October 3rd 1863 Mrs Davidson widow of Col Treadwell burial place now located outside City limits very close to house built byGeneral David G Cooke circa 1870 After service Mr Cooke returned home to start family again but this time we have 2 more kids born & lived here until death: daughter Eliza Mae Ransom born April 10th 1880 & son Franklin William Ransom born December 24th 1888

In 1830, the population of Bristol was about 3,000 people. By 1840, the population had grown to about 10,000 people. In 1845, a courthouse and jail were built in Bristol. The town became a city in 1871.
