In 1815, during the time when Nashville was founded as a trading post on the Cumberland River, Bristol was organized as a town and became one of the most important settlements in what is now East Tennessee. The city was named after England's Bristol Cathedral which had been destroyed by fire in 1666. After being burned down again in 1795 due to an insurrection against English rule led by John Sevier III and his brother-in-law George Washington, Bristol became known as "the Athens of the East." It continued to be an important center for trade and culture until around 1800 when its economy began to decline due to factors such as changing agricultural methods and increased production from nearby Nashville. The last resident of Bristol died on July 1, 1892.

Bristol, Tennessee was founded in 1819 by James Watts and his brother-in-law William Hodgdon. The town was named after the Bristol River. The town was laid out on a square grid plan and had two churches, four schools, and twelve stores. In 1850, the Tennessee legislature passed a bill authorizing the erection of a military post in Bristol. The post was built in 1851 and named Fort Bragg.
