Bristol, Tennessee is a small town located in Marshall County, Tennessee. The population was 3,029 at the 2010 census. Bristol has an rich history dating back to the 1800s when it was part of the Cherokee Nation. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson appointed Captain John Sevier as military commander of what is now Marshall County and made Bristol the seat of the county. The first post office in Bristol was established in 1825 and remained open until 1876. From 1830 to 1840, Bristol was under Confederate rule and became known as "The Confederacy's Capital." After the Civil War ended, Bristol reverted to its original status as a town. In 1907, Congress passed the Knox-McKinley Act which repealed all west Tennessee school districts south of Louisville Gainesboro Road. After years of effort by local officials and citizens, on November 5th, 1916, Bristol became one of two towns in Marshall County (the other being Clarksville) that joined together to form the new state of Tennessee. On December 12th 1959, during Hurricane Donnie (a very strong storm), damage caused by Donnie totaled over $100 million dollars with $40 million dollars coming from Bristol alone!
Bristol, Tennessee was founded in 1819 by white men looking for a new home. The area that is now Bristol was originally located in Calloway County, Ohio. After some searching, the men found a location they thought would be perfect for their new town: a valley between the Appalachian Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau. They named their town after Bristol, England, which they had visited while on their honeymoon.
