Brentwood is a small town in Fentress County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,059 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area and is located on the eastern border of the city of Memphis. Brentwood is one of five towns that make up the mountain village of Mount Vernon. Brentwood was platted in 1851 when members of the Gentry family came from Kentucky to purchase land in what is now Fentress County. The community was named for Captain John Brent (1784-1858), a Revolutionary War hero who had served as an American officer under General James Wilkinson. In 1852, Colonel James Soddy laid out a town square that still exists and contains several businesses including A&P Grocery Store, which remains open today; Mrs. Bland's Schoolhouse which closed in 1961; and Mr. Pritchard's Garage where IGA stores are located today until it closed in 1990s. Brentwood grew quickly due to its location close to transportation routes and its easy access to railroad tracks through nearby Mt Vernon Township. By 1870, Brentwood had a school, church, post office and three blacksmiths who provided services such as forging nails and making horseshoes for local farmers. By 1880, there were over 100 residents in Brentwood with nearly all living within two miles of their homes or closer by walking or riding bicycles across fields or roads into town square where they enjoyed refreshment from Mrs Bland's Schoolhouse public kitchen after school activities during summer months while waiting for their bus home from work at factories around town during winter months. Brentwood was founded in 1796 as a small trading post on the Cumberland River. The community grew rapidly, and by 1815 it had reached its peak population of 1,500 people. By 1840 Brentwood had fallen into decay, and by 1865 it had been destroyed by a fire. However, the town's difficult history has not stopped its growth in subsequent years; today Brentwood is an important commercial and cultural center for the region. The first settlers to arrive in Brentwood were families from Tennessee who decided to move west after the American Revolution. The original settlers included three brothers: John, James and Isaac Brentwood. The brothers opened a store in what is now known as First Street near where present-day Market Street meets Central Avenue. In 1796, when Brentwood was founded, there were only six white men living in the area; within 10 years however, they had increased to 12 with the arrival of additional settlers from Tennessee and Georgia. In 1815, soon after becoming an official town, Brentwood began receiving shipments of goods from England through traders named Richardson and Brownell. These traders became very important early on because they provided transportation and supplies for many of the local businesses that sprang up around Brentwood during this time period including stores, pubs and restaurants. One such business that thrived during this time was Mrs. Barnett's Bakery which operated out of a building on East Main Street until it burned down in 1876. Another significant early businessperson involved in founding or leading Brentwood was Henry Atherton who served as mayor from 1825-1827 and 1830-1834; he also built a flour Mill at what is now Ninth street between Exchange Boulevard and Western Avenue.) After falling victim to social and economic decline during the turn of the century, Brentwood began to lose its status as an important center for trade and industry. It remained an occasional residential community through the 1920s and 1930s but declined significantly in popularity after World War II ended.
