SIU Carbondale relocated to its current location on Northside Drive in 1974 and opened its doors to students from across Tennessee and Georgia that fall semester; however, due to financial difficulties later that year Southern Illinois University Carbondale closed its doors due to lack of enrollment despite pledges from then-Governor Phil Bredesen not to close any more schools within his administration.
