Brentwood is a town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,057 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. Brentwood is known for its large number of homes and businesses that were built during the early days of Chattanooga's growth and for its rich history. This process continued until 1951 when all villages within Williamson County were annexed into Chattanooga proper by Act No. 283 of that year. The success enjoyed by Chattanooga during the late 19th century led to rapid growth throughout much of Tennessee; indeed, by 1900 only 2/3ths of Tennesseans lived in rural areas outside Nashville while one-third lived within 10 miles (16 km) of city limits alone. But this growth also generated problems that continue to be faced today: Artesian wells heated groundwater instead than using natural cooling systems which made wells more liable to leakage and caused riverside flooding; streetcar lines created traffic jams on small streets; warehouses often housed too many factories where water from Evaporator plants polluted water supplies ultimately leading to death because Phenol (a carcinogen) was released into air currents coming into contact with humans). Brentwood is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. It is located on the banks of the Cumberland River and about 25 miles (40 km) south of Nashville. The population was 3,848 at the 2010 census. Brentwood is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first recorded mention of Brentwood was in 1795 when surveys called it "Brentford" and "Brentford Mill". In 1811, James Hightower established a sawmill here which became known as Hightower's Mills. By 1840, there were three mills in Brentwood – Hightower's Mills, Gentry's Mills and Post & Lock Manufacturing Company's mills. The last mill closed in 1881. In 1864, General Andrew Johnson visited Brentwood and ordered all citizens to move to new homes that had been provided by the Ulysses S. Grant Administration for troops stationed within the area at this time during the Civil War. Many residents chose to remain in their homes or moved to surrounding towns such as Lebanon and Franklin while others chose to relocate to other states with easier access to farmland or jobs during Reconstruction following the war. Today, Brentwood remains a small but vibrant community with many active businesses and organizations including two high schools – Middle Tennessee State University' s Regency School District (RSD) Campus (formerly known as Green Hills High School) and Plantation Springs Charter School – as well as several churches including First Baptist Church (#1), Second Baptist Church (#2), Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (#3), Presbyterian ReformedChurch #4-6-8 #7-9 #10–12 #13-15 #16-18; two libraries - Belmont Community Library System#1 near Main Street east of town square and Southside Christian library on Old Hickory Road just north of I-35W; one post office - The Post Office Branch Male Branch at 601 W Campbell Ave.; one fire department - Corydon Volunteer Fire Department; one ambulance service - Knoxville Ambulance Service; one Rural Electric Cooperative Association affiliate - Southern Appalachian Electric Cooperative Association (SAPE). The community has numerous annual events/fairs such as Oktoberfest celebration on October 16th each year followed by Christmas Fair Jan 1st thru Feb 2nd inclusive combined then Homecoming parade on April 14th featuring local talent along with live music from various bands usually started around September/October preceding football games against neighboring school districts etcetera these typically attract over 100 people per event creating some sort of festive atmosphere each year
Brentwood was founded by the Brentwoods in 1814. The family patriarch, Nathaniel Brentwood, arrived in Tennessee in 1786 and began to settle the area around what is now downtown Nashville. He erected the first log cabin in what is now Brentwood. The present-day town was named for Nathaniel’s grandson, Peter Brentwood, who donated land for a school and churches in 1819. After serving as a state legislator from 1821 to 1824, he married Anna Whitfield (daughter of General John Whitfield). The couple moved to Nashville in 1830 and built a home on Third Street. They had one child, Sarah Fairfax Brentwood (1831-1920), who became an accomplished writer and editor. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Tennessee, Mrs. Brentwood sided with the Union side and her husband died soon afterward at sea while trying to return home. Their daughter continued to reside in Nashville until her death there in 1920; she is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
