Brentwood is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee. The population was 2,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1817 by James Robertson and his wife, Margaret Brentwood. The Brentwoods were farmers and their home was on what is now Second Street in downtown Brentwood. In 1819, the Brentwoods moved to a farm nearpresent-day Mount Vernon and began to sell goods from their farmstead to customers located throughout Davidson County. In 1825, James Robertson sold his interest in the business to Hugh Lawson who continued running it as Lawson's Mercantile Store until 1865 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1827, John Fenton opened a grocery store in downtown Brentwood which became known as Fenton's General Store until 1924 when it merged with Peoples Drug store across First Avenue from downtown (now Music Row). The post office called Brentwood "Brent" until 1907 when it changed its name to "Mount Vernon". In 1912, the post office reopened as "Newbern" afterTennessee congressman J W Newbern donated land for the new facility. After World War I ended, many people left for good because of high taxes and extremely low wages during that time period; however, some stayed and started businesses such as shoe stores and other retail enterprises. When war broke out again in 1939 most people left again but some decided to stay because of nearby Lebanon Military Academy which offered military training for young men from Tennessee Valley townspeople who wanted or needed an opportunity beyond farming or ranching skillsetters like themselves during that time period In 1941 local resident Floyd Allred organized a group of locals together with support from army officers stationed at Fort Knox (later Camp David) within driving distance of Newbern led by Allred formed the nucleus of what would become known as Operation Torch which aimed primarily at liberating North Africa from Axis forces under German leadership
