The area that now makes up Brentwood was first settled by farmers in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The area became an industrial center after the city was founded in 1906. In 1922, Brentwood became one of the cities served by Nashville's Municipal Electric Railway (MEWR). This gave residents easy access to downtown Nashville and its many stores and businesses. The MEWR closed down in 2006 but left behind a legacy of streetcar service along Mountain View Avenue that connects downtown with nearby neighborhoods such as Garden Hills and Oak Lawn. In recent years, Brentwood has become home to many professional athletes and their families who live or commute to various leagues across North America. These include football players from Tennessee State University (TSU), baseball players from Vanderbilt University, basketball players from UTEP, tennis players from Georgetown University and more. During World War II, much progress was made within the community thanks to financial donations from local businessmen like John Ladd or Harry Houdini himself which led to increased production inside local factories during that time period.
