It is part of the Chattanooga–Miawassee, TN-WD Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brentwood is east of downtown and west of East Campus Road. The first settlers in Brentwood were families from Ohio who came to Chattanooga in 1819. They built a log cabin on what was then known as South Fork Creek and named it after their home state, Kentucky. In 1830, several other Ohio families arrived and founded the village of Brentwood on land now belonging to the city of Chattanooga. The first school in Brentwood was built on the corner of South Campus Road and West Main Street in 1833 by Rev. John Burchill. In 1840, two more schools were opened: one for girls at 10th street and Union Avenue; and one for boys at 12th street and Charter Street. In 1870, a post office called Brentwood was established but it continued to be used as a way station for travelers on their way to Knoxville or Nashville because there wasn’t enough space along East Campus Road for all the people coming into town during that time period. In 1875, industrialists John Dillin and Wm Hogg started producing cottonseed oil hereabouts which led to increased business activity around town so they built a mill on South Campus Road which became known as “Hogg’s Mill” until it ceased operations in 1922 due to pollution concerns following World War I.[1] By 1900 there were about 150 residents living in Brentwood with 100 acres (40 hectares) of farmland available for farming out towards Chickamauga Creek[2] In 1910 when Chattanoogan County was created much like Duval County had been before it belonged almost entirely to Hamilton County (the old coalfields had been sold off). However there remained considerable rural land east of Interstate 20 including parts of present-day Brentwood[3][4]. When Chattanooga annexed neighboring Maumee Township she set up her own government making decisions that applied only within her borders i e not countywide like usual where different boards governed different areas ie fire protection board & jail etc etc

Other notable residents include Jeptha Meeks (a doctor), Ethel McGhee (whose husband played football for Vanderbilt University), Merle Haggard (the singer behind “Oklahoma”), Lamar Alexander (the U S Senator fromTennessee from 2003 until 2007), Jane Fonda (the actress who portrayed Betty Ford in “Easy Rider”), Jessie Jackson (the singer who performed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics) and more!
