When the Ordnance Department started stockpiling guns in Brentwood, Tennessee in the 1920s, they needed a way to keep them organized. One option was to have each gunsmith create a swivel for his or her weapon. The process of making a gun swivel required experience and skill, so not many people were able to do it. However, when the Second World War began, some of the owners of small businesses in Brentwood decided to arm themselves with shotguns and pistols. As a result, demand for gunswives increased. Brentwood is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. It was founded in 1820 and named for Captain Brentwood of the British Royal Navy. The population was 10,032 at the 2010 census. The town was platted in 1820 by John Neely Garner and his brother Amos Garner. In 1830, Captain John A. Morehead donated land to the town for a courthouse and schoolhouse. The Morehead family had a large plantation near the original settlement. They moved to Brentwood after their plantation failed in the 1830s. The first store opened in 1828 on Meeting Street east of Old Hickory Boulevard. By 1840, there were six stores in Brentwood with an average size of $2 per week each. By 1850, there were twenty-four stores with an average size of $10 per week each. Merchants realized that they could not keep up with demand for goods from farmers throughout the region so they decided to sell their products direct to consumers instead of going through traders or wholesalers. This gave people more control over what they bought and allowed them to save money which helped create self-reliance among citizens during this time period. In 1860, two brothers named James Covington started a grocery store on Third Avenue north of present day State Capitol Drive called "The Mercantile." soon afterwards another grocery store followed suit on Second Avenue south which became known as "Grano's". In 1865 when Governor Andrew Johnson came to Hardin County he announced that all public schools would be closed because Union soldiers were being sent into Nashville as part of General Robert Ewell's Confederate army effort against Johnson's administration headed by Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest(). The decision forced many residents including many local merchants (of whom James Covington) to leave Brentwood and start new businesses elsewhere within days or weeks; this included The Mercantile which continued operating until 1870 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by Confederate artillery shelling during the Battle of Gettysburg
Brentwood was founded in 1796 by a group of Scotsmen who fled from the Jacobite Rising in Scotland. The settlers named their new town after a nearby clearing called Brentwood Forest. The first store opened in 1805, and the first post office was established in 1814. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, and by 1912 it had over 1,000 residents. Brentwood became an important center for industry during the 20th century, with a large population of mechanics and engineers. In 1978, Brentwood was renamed to honor Tennessee's governor, Brent Woodrow Harding
