Brentwood is a city in Tennessee, United States. The population was 509 at the 2010 census, down from 527 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The first store opened in 1835 and remained in operation until 1906. The merger created what is now known as "Chattanooga's Sixteenth Ward" which included most of Brentwood including much of today's downtown area; it also annexed much of northwestern Knoxville (now called East Knoxville). At that time, many people thought this annexation would result in increased tension between the two cities because their populations were so different - but it actually resulted in growth and development for both towns. The first residents of Brentwood were farmers and their families who came to the area in the mid-19th century. In 1871, a sawmill was built on the Cumberland River and began production of lumber for downtown Nashville. The mill closed in 1924 after being bought by J. P. Morgan & Co.. In 1925, Brentwood's post office was established and quickly became one of the most popular local businesses in town due to its low cost of postage and its close proximity to downtown Nashville. By 1930, Brentwood had a grocery store, two churches (one Methodist and one Baptist), a bank branch, three physicians (all dentists), two grocers (both with meat stores), four schools (three high school juniors and one middle school), two restaurants/cafés - One Italian and One American - as well as several rental propertiesranging from studios to houses. In 1961, when Davidson College opened its new campus on what is now known as Jackson Avenue in central Brentwood, many people moved out of their homes into new trailers or apartments that they erected on Athletic Park Drive near where longtime resident Donny Pellman plowed his land for use as college parking lot during development days which later became Pellman Stadium. Brentwood was founded by John Brent in 1827. The original town was located on the Tennessee River, but it relocated in 1868 to its current location on the north side of the Cumberland River. In 1907, Brentwood became a city and has since grown into one of the most significant cities in Tennessee.
