Within walking distance are several small businesses including Ace Hardware (on Green Lawn Drive), Applebees / TGIFs (across from Sprouts Farmers Market), Barnes & Noble bookstore/cafeteria complex (east side off Academy Circle near highway exit ramp), Chinese takeout restaurants (), Denny's restaurant (& gas station) (/ Shell gas station west border), Dodds Hardware store (& Dominick's pizza place north border), Ford dealership (& more than 20 smaller stores) across street from church; three golf courses: Valley Forge Golf Course & Spa Resort - Harding Park Golf Course operated by PGA National Tour member Webber Farms LLC., Iron Mountain Golf Club - operated by R&D Associates Inc.,and Prestige Hills Golf Club - operated by Olympic Sports Corporation;; two churches: Presbyterian Hospital Chapel & BaptistChurch Westmoreland Chapel ().

During World War II, Brentwood played an important role in the war effort as a military base for cotton production. After the war ended, many homes were abandoned and fell into disrepair until they were purchased by various businesses and individuals over the years and restored or renovated to their former glory. One such individual was entrepreneur Bud Walton who used his profits from Walmart to purchase many of these homes and turn them into luxury rentals or live in them himself. Today, Brentwood continues to be a popular place for locals and visitors alike to live, work, play and raise families; making it one of Nashville's most vibrant communities livable today!
