Brentwood is one of the oldest towns in Tennessee and was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1796. It became an incorporated municipality on December 1, 1892. Brentwood is known for its horse farms and other traditional farming activities as well as its rich history that dates back to before the American Revolution. In 1814, when Randolph County was first organized, Brentwood was part of it. The town's name comes from two different sources: "brenda" means "bridge" and "thorn" refers to a large tree near the original settlement site that stood until recently. The most famous resident of Brentwood during its early years was Levi Richardson Sr., who served as mayor from 1907 to 1912 and 1913 to 1916 and also ran for Congress three times (1892-1896, 1900-1904, 1906). He is also noted for his contributions to music and education in the community. Other notable residents during this time include attorney General John Sevier (1857-1929), educator James Fenton (1889-1968), dentist Jeptha Hensley (1868-1945), physician Dr. John Pemberton (1850-1926) and lawyer Julius Rosenwald (1900-1978).
Brentwood was founded in 1817 by John Brent and his family. The community grew quickly after it was platted on the banks of the Tennessee River. By 1830, Brentwood had a population of over 100 people. In 1836, Brentwood became the county seat of Hardin County. In 1851, Brentwood was annexed by Knox County.
