Brentwood is a city in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 21,874 at the 2010 census. Brentwood is known for itsurns and parade routes. The city was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1855 as a mission Station on the White Oak River. It became an incorporated town in 1872 and has since grown to over 100,000 people. Brentwood's downtown area features a rich history that can be traced back to when it was a mission station on the White Oak River. In 1855, Methodist missionaries arrived in Tennessee with plans to build a church and school in what is now Brentwood. They named their new town after John Wesley Hardin, one of their early converts and another founder of the Methodist Church in America. In 1862, during the American Civil War, Brentwood served as home to Confederate General Jubal Early's headquarters east of Chattanooga before he retreated south into Kentucky. The battle site still exists today as part of the City Limits Park district of Brentwood. The community continued to grow during the post-war years as demand for housing outpaced available land or infrastructure necessary for such growth (e.g., schools or water systems). In 1951, local citizens voted to incorporate as an independent city under the name "Brentwood". The incorporation process took several years due to resistance from some members ofthe community who felt that being annexed by Nashville would result in less control over its own affairs - something that had been desired by many residents since incorporation daydreams began more than 50 years earlier! The move from missionary station status to full-fledged municipality also saw new roads built; such initiatives were typical of early 20th century townsfolk who were eager to accommodate growing numbers while maintaining their rural roots! In recent decades, much progress has been made within Trenton Township which borders Brentwood on three sides - including passage last year of legislation granting autonomy referendum status unto Trenton TownshipPDF (similarly worded but not identical) which allows residents thereof greater say on matters related thereto including budgeting and zoning; annexation (at first tentative only) by neighboring Hardin County; establishment this past year of two separate parks within Trenton Township proper paralleling adjacent Interstate 25/Tennessee Valley Highway: First Park featuring baseball diamonds and playground equipment located on Maple Road just north of I-25 North while Second Park focusing entirely upon green space located adjacent USHwy 11E between SR1 & SR2
Brentwood was founded in 1802 by Captain Brentwood and his wife, Catharine. The area now known as Brentwood was a part of the Cherokee Nation until 1830, when it became part of Tennessee. In 1836, the state of Tennessee purchased all of the land east of the Cumberland River from the Cherokees. The town began to grow rapidly after this purchase and soon had a population of around 2,500 people. By 1840, Brentwood had become an important center for trade in the region and its economy flourished. In 1845, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Brentwood and burned most of the town down in order to punish the town's residents for supporting President James K. Polk's Unionist movement. Although small-scale raids continued into the 1850s and 1860s, Brentwood slowly regained its former prosperity thanks to its location at the crossroads of two major rivers and its role as a commercial center. However, during Reconstruction era (1865-1913), Brentwood experienced some significant problems with crime and corruption that led to it becoming a troubled community again. However, recent redevelopment efforts have helped to revive much of downtown Brentwood as an attractive destination for tourists and locals alike.
