Bartlett, Tennessee is a small town located in the Sequatchie County area of south central Tennessee. The population was 1,719 at the 2000 census, and 2,032 in 2010. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. Bartlett has been inhabited by various cultures for more than 10,000 years. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish explorers in 1539-1540. They named the area San Marcos after their captain who discovered it while exploring the lower Cumberland River region. Bartlett was part of what is now Sequatchie County when it was organized as a county in 1827. The first scopes built in Bartlett were used for hunting game from early on in its history. A local hunter, Sam Hogg, built his own scope around 1800 using a parabolic reflector and telescope he had acquired from an Englishman trading with the Cherokee Nation. He became known as "the Father of Bartlett Scopes." By 1825, several other farmers had also erected telescopes within view of each other at home or on farms outside town so that they could better observation for hunting game such as deer and turkey. In 1852-1853 two Yankee officers traveling through southern Tennessee stopped at a farm near present day Bartlett to explore some new land they had discovered west of Knoxville along Interstate 40 (then called US 41). They made note of an abundance of blackbirds eating grains growing wild near their encampment and proposed naming this tract “Hogback Hill” after one of their field guides who referred to these birds as "hogs". When General Ulysses S Grant visited nearby Pulaski County during his Overland Expedition in 1865 he noted Hogback Hill among other sites being studied by Confederate forces nearby and chose it as his headquarters campground on Sulphur Springs Creek where he established Fort Donelson later that year! A local man named James Mize built his first scopes here about 1840 using a reflector/telescope combination which consisted only of a mirror with an eyepiece mounted above it with dark glass lenses covered by cloths to protect them from rain or sunlight damage; these scopes could only be used for astronomical observations not target shooting because no means existed then to control focus or adjust magnification if needed indoors! By 1850 most all Tennesseans living within 5 miles (8 km) either possessed one or more telescopes set up on any hillock or high spot within easy view including public buildings like churches and schools! All public meetings held in Pickwick were also open to observers regardlessof whether they could attend because knowledge about important events being debated publicly was disseminated through telescopic views! In 1850 there were over 100 private households operating scopes throughout the state! However due mainly to lack funding preachers began preaching against astronomy during this time period leading many families out into fields setting up telescopes evenings & mornings until widespread persecution ended following Union army's victory over Confederates at Appomattox Court House April 9th 1865!!!!! This event marked end Of Public Astronomy In TN!!! After that point almost all observatories closed except for 4 very few family operated ones thruout Appalachians thru out Late 19th century....... Today remnant Observatory’s are still operatein TN but mostly used for educational purposes

The first settlers in Bartlett were two families who came from Ohio in 1811. They named their settlement after John Bartlett, an American Revolutionary War general and delegate to the Continental Congress from that state. The original store and post office were located on the corner of Second Street and High Street. In 1833, a second store was built on Third Street and it continued to serve as the town's main business until 1955 when it closed its doors due to fire. In 1880, George Stephenson built a railroad between Nashville and Davidson City which passed through Bartlett along its way. This helped to spur development in the town as people began traveling distances for work or pleasure now that they had access to more amenities than they could find nearer home. By 1910, Bartlett had a school and three stores; however, by 1930 only one store remained open with a population of 1,471 residents. However, during World War II many local businesses supported the war effort such as producing munitions for the military; this led to an increase in population growth as Morehead State University opened up shop nearby in 1945 which boosted economic activity even further within Bartlett throughout the postwar years As early as 1907 there existed plans for annexation by neighboring city of Murfreesboro but no action was ever taken due to lack of support from both sides involved until 1948 when then- mayor James Loyd appointed commissioners to discuss annexation possibilities with Murfreesboro officials On March 11th 1950 voters approved incorporation of Barthleton into Davidson County In 1957 another hospital opened up called Vanderbilt HealthCare Center which increased competition for services within Bartlett so much so that two out of every three citizens opted not to stay within their original community instead moving into new homes outside town limits . However unlike other towns where this type of development simply displaced existing residents rather than adding new faces stability slowly started emerging although some say that overall patterns changed too quickly for what once seemed like an underdeveloped community

Bartlett was founded in 1851 by Reverend Dr. Joseph H. Bartlett and his wife, Mrs. Anna L. Smith. The town was named for General James Robertson Bartlett, who served as a colonel in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The post office operated from 1852 to 1865 and was located at the current location of the city of Memphis.
