The first settler in Bartlett was John Bartlett who came to the area in 1811. The town began as a farmstead and grew up around banking and trade with surrounding counties. A post office was established here in 1827, and by 1840 there were over 100 residents in the community. In 1853, the town became a village when it joined Hardin County. The next few decades saw some growth and advancements for Bartlett; however, World War II caused many of the industries that had helped make this community prosperous to close down or move away from its location near Murfreesboro due to wartime production demands. However, despite these struggles, Bartlett persevered through the war years and continued to grow thanks to new businesses that arrived during postwar expansionism around Nashville – including Wacoal Industries (now Walmart), Sears Roebuck & Co., Coca-Cola Bottling Works (), Joplin Steel Works(), and Ford Motor Company (). During this time period, also lasting until 1960s Bartlett experienced an increase in population due largely to waves of migrant workers coming into the city looking for work during oil rushes throughout much of America during that decade (). Despite this influx of people new life began to slowly emerge among already existing citizens while also deteriorating infrastructure led eventually to several fires starting within downtown which destroyed most of what had been built there only 10 years prior (). Today much of what once existed here remains all but gone as development has taken over once again making it one of today’s poorest communities on average ranking 3rd out of 4 Tennessee towns according to poverty rates released by “Tennessee Poverty Research Initiative” (). John Neely Lewis became Mayoralty incumbent after being elected unopposed with 54% against challenger Artis Gilmore on November 7th .
