This act also provided for the erection of buildings on campus including a chapel and dormitories for students. In 1850, Samuel Morse established the first post office in Bartlett with five letters sent each way. By 1860, Bartlett had two banks (the First National Bank and the Second National Bank), four general stores (the Central Merchants Store at Eighth Street & Elm Street; The Gadsden County Merchant House at Sixth Street & Elm Street; Jno Haggerty’s Drug Store at Fourth Street & ElmStreet), eleven schools (nine public primary schools; one academy; one special school for teachers), thirty-eight households (twenty-four single family dwellings; twenty-four multi-family dwellings), two churches (The Methodist Episcopal Church on Main Avenue east of Broadwalk; The Baptist Association Chapel west of Broadwalk)*, eight physician practices*, six blacksmith shops*, ten enlisted men’s barracks* (*estimated only by date*) (*estimated only by number*) In 1865*, following the American Civil War*, Bartlett became part of Anderson County when it was created from parts of Hardin County.* *Anderson County included most of what is now eastern Davidson County as well as much of western Knoxville* *Samuel Morse established first post office in Bartlett
Bartlett was founded in 1868 by Ishmael Bartlett and his brothers. The town grew rapidly, and by 1888 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1912, Bartlett became the capital of Tennessee.
