Bartlett is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,441 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The community began as a cabin farm on the edge of a rolling forest about two miles (3 km) east of Bartlett on what was then known as Iron Mountain Road. In 1875, A.F. Stone opened his general store and post office in what is now the village core of Bartlett; Stone also operated a school and warehouse. In 1878, Wm. Henson built a smelter on the Chinnion River near present-day Bartlett for crushing coal from nearby Iron Mountain mines; he also operated a wagon shop and stagescoach line to carry passengers to Knoxville and other cities in eastern Tennessee. The first school in Bartlett was taught by Sallie Gentry until 1886 when Mrs. Jervis erected an academy building which she used until 1902 when it became home to Barton High School; it was replaced by current Barton Elementary School in 1957 after that school was destroyed by fire The first white settler in central Hardin County was James Burchfield who arrived around 1800 with his family from Maryland; he built a log cabin about three miles (5 km) south of present-day Bartlett on land that later became part of Hardin County.; Burchfield's son Daniel started plowing fields adjacent to his cabin in 1824 and soon discovered valuable coal seams underlying the forest floor where he mined more than $2 million worth of Coal during his lifetime including 350 tons (1,000 kg) shipped downriver each day for shipment back upriver to Nashville.. His son John continued mining but died young leaving Daniel sole owner and operator of Hardin Coal Mines & Coke Co., one of only two such companies remaining operating within states boundaries during the late 19th century.. Daniel's widow Harriett ran this company with her son Amos from 1830-1857 before selling it outright to Pemberton Mining Company which controlled much lower grades but still exported millions of dollars worth of Coal each year between 1860-1870 primarily destined for export via riverboats across theTennessee River system.; Harriett later married Ebeneezer Mott who operated another mine & railroad companynearpresentdayMilton,Tennesseebeforebecomingthefirst woman ever elected as Mayorofthattownduringthe20thcentury.; After Harriett's death Amos took over operations at Daniels' old mine but abandoned it due to lack of resources some time before 1850 when Bardwell purchased it from him uralongernowknownasBarton Mines ; Porter bought Barton Mines from Bardwell&operatedituntil1912whenitpassed into private hands again The Smelter at Coldwater closed circa 1930s although there may have been earlier production . Bartlett is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville–Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Bartlett had a population of 705 in 2000. The first settler in Bartlett was James Dickey, who found land on the side of a mountain in 1828. He named his land "Bartlett." A post office was established at Bartlett in 1829, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1893. In 1830, John Crouch settled near what is now Bartlett with his family. In 1832, he married Anna Hargrave and they started a farm that continues to be run today by their descendants. Anna Hargrave's great-granddaughter lives in Bartlett and has been farming there since her grandmother's time. In 1833, Augustuscy Morse located two stores within one mile (1 km) of each other at what is now the intersection of US Highway 421 and US Highway 321 northeast of downtown Bartlett. This store continued operation until it closed around 1908 when it became an agricultural store and barns were built on its site for storage purposes only. In 1865, Wm Fenton opened up a grocery store just north of where current day US 421 meets US Highway 321 east of downtown Bartlettsville/Barton Springs/Moses Lake Village Limits (Moses Lake Township). This store operated until 1984 when it closed due to lackadaisical management by its operators combined with competition from larger stores opening up throughout the area during this time period; however some evidence suggests that some items such as candy may have still been sold here before 1984 because records show purchases made here prior to that date are still being processed through our warehouse system today! Wm Fenton also happened to be one half owner or operator with Jno Pritchard & Sons grocery store which occupied same location currently occupied by Walmart after that business relocated out onto new property across town! In recent years local historian Donny Youngblood has done research into this history which has resulted in uncovering additional information about thisearly grocery store including photos and documents supporting claims made by locals previously about how important Jno Pritchard & Sons actually were within early 19th century community life!! This demonstrates once again how powerful local histories can be when researched well!!!
