He also built a large home on Main Street which still stands today. Over time, his store became one of the most popular in Bartlett with its wide variety of products and its friendly atmosphere. In 1865, John Witherspoon moved to Bartlett from Louisville, Kentucky and started Witherspoon & Company mercantile business with his brother James Witherspoon. This company became very successful and continued until 1900 when it merged with another company to form J&J Snider & Co Incorporated (now known as JDS International). In 1904-1905 John Witherspoon donated land to create the current Walmart Supercenter which now occupies much of downtown Bartlett. In 1930s George Hargrave opened Whataburger restaurant near Interstate 85 and long ago established himself as one of the most popular regional restaurateurs in America with over 100 locations across 35 states including many throughout Tennessee including downtown Bartlett where he operated his establishment for more than 50 years until it closed down in 2000 due to environmental concerns .
