At the time it was one of the most remote settlements in America. By 1850, Bartlett had a school, post office, grocery store and blacksmith shop. In 1892, permission to build a railroad through Hardin County was obtained and construction began on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. The town quickly grew into a major transportation center for the region and its growth spurt continued until 1920 when World War I interrupted rail traffic and eliminated many of the jobs that had supported Bartlett's growth. In 1925, Hardin County voters passed an ordinance creating what is now known as "thebartletown." This designation recognizes that Bartlett has been continuously inhabited since 1838 and has played an important role in local history and culture

Bartlett, Tennessee is a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of Western Tennessee. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cumberland County district. The community was named for Colonel David Bartlett, an early settler in this area. The first post office in Bartlett opened on October 24, 1802. In 1812, a school and store were built in the town by subscription from surrounding districts. In 1868, a railroad was constructed through Bartlett and it became an important commercial center for the region. By 1910, there were three churches in Bartlett with over 100 residents attending services each week. However, during World War I, most of the logging and farming operations ceased because of prohibitionism by President Woodrow Wilson; however some mills did continue to operate until after World War II when they were taken over by other businesses or closed down entirely. A new church was built in 1914 on Main Street and it remains one of the town's most popular tourist attractions today due to its unique architecture and interesting story behind its construction which began as a simple farmhouse with two rooms thatched with corn husks before becoming one of Nashville's most influential buildings during prohibition times The building also served as the headquarters for local government from 1915-1918 before being moved to its current location across from downtown in 1922

The town was originally a small farming community, but it rapidly became an agricultural center due to its location on the Cumberland River. In 1847, the first internal combustion engine was invented in Bartlett by a local man, Julius White. The town also played a significant role in the development of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
