After the war ended, many residents returned to their farmsteads while others moved into larger settlements such as Memphis or Nashville. In 1865, Colonel John Bartlett sold his land to General Waddell for $5,000 cash plus 10 slaves who had been purchased from African Americans living near Clarksville southeast of Bartlett. The new owners renamed the community "Barton" after General Waddell's headquarters during the war. In 1870–71, a railway line called the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad was built through Barton from Nashville to Chattanooga; this helped spur economic development within Barton and other surrounding towns along its route. Barton experienced rapid growth during this time with businesses opening up including grocery stores, livery services, breweries (including one that produced whiskey), printing presses, lumber yards (including one that made plank doors), cotton plantations (some with over 100 slaves working them), schools (including one teaching white children how to read), churches (of all denominations), hospitals (including one containing both mental patients and wounded soldiers) as well as homes for rural farmers who grew cotton until it became too difficult to do so due to lack of capital or goodEMPTY
