Bartlett is a small town located in Robertson County, Tennessee. The population was 792 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Robertson County. The first settlers in Bartlett were Elijah and Rebecca Bartlett who arrived in 1799. They operated a gristmill on the river near present day Bartlett and built a log cabin nearby. In 1814, Elijah's son-in-law, James Hays, moved to Bartlett from Knoxville and started an agricultural business that producedandy beans, cornmeal and other goods for local markets. In 1834, John Witherspoon bought Hays' business and continued operations until his death in 1862. In 1865, General Andrew Johnson became President of the United States and ordered all Confederate forces within Union territory to disperse or be destroyed. Most of the remaining Confederate forces retreated to Chattanooga but some moved into western Robertson County where they established new settlements such as Hardeman City (now Memphis) and Enterprise (now Enterprise). In 1868, Mayor David Aiken erected a home at current day Bartlett for himself and his wife Hannah Prentice Aiken which still stands today. On May 15th of that year, he donated land on which the present day courthouse was built. The Methodists began construction of theirown church in 1872 which also remains standing today. As part of Reconstruction after the Civil War, many African Americans were brought into eastern Tennessee to work on farms or as slave labor during this time period including those from Barthlettsville who worked under owners such as George Washington Hunt Sr.. These laborers had no legal rights whatsoever but due to their proximity to large Southern cities like Nashville they were not objectified or exploited like slaves outside of these areas did however they did experience racism by their white employers
