The Athens area was first settled by the Cherokee in the late 18th century. In 1796, General Logan Battle fought a battle at what is now known as Greeneville against the Cherokees. In 1807, Athens was founded as a trading post on the Tennessee River by James Wilkinson and his brothers-in-law, Amos Kendall and John Sevier. The post served as a crossroads for goods traveling up and down the river. By 1830, Athens had become an important commercial center due to its location on the river and its access to large tracts of land south of Nashville. A smallpox epidemic in 1829 killed more than one-third of the population of Athens. The city rebuilt rapidly under leadership of Mayor James Auld and City Council Member David Garrick. In 1830, Athens became capital of Jackson County after Jackson was granted statehood. As part of this process, Athens became known as "the most eastern county seat in Tennessee." During Reconstruction, Atlanta began to grow rapidly as a result of its status as the southern capital of America. In 1871, Athens became involved in disputes with Atlanta over jurisdiction over federal lands west of Interstate 20 (now I-20). This led to heavy fighting that ended with an agreement between both cities that allowed for unrestricted trade between them. During World War II, Athenians responded vigorously to Allied military efforts; they were one of only two American cities not burned during the war effort. After World War II ended, growth continued with suburban development throughout much of central Knoxville until downtowns such as downtown Athens experienced significant gentrification during the 1990s/2000s recession when new businesses moved into older areas near shopping malls
The city of Athens, Tennessee was founded in 1819 by General John C. Frémont as the temporary capital of the Treaty of Paris after the end of the American War for Independence. The town became a permanent city in 1829. In 1840, Athens became a county seat and remained so until it was abolished in 1907.
