The first post office opened in Thanasia on November 3rd, 1840 and served residents until November 22nd that year when postal service was discontinued due to war conditions across the United States. From then until 1865 Thanasia had three postmasters: James Hogg (1841-1845), John Waddell (1846-1851), and Jesse Fenton (1852-1857). During this time mail service was provided by stagecoaches which took residents around town stop at various businesses along their route providing passengers with letters or parcels while they waited for their turn at the busy post office located on Broad Street in downtown Athens which served as both an important commercial district during this time period as well as housing for many local merchants who operated out of their businesses along Broad Street between First/Second Streets West and Third Streets East including such notable individuals as George Whiteoak ( stagescoach driver ), Drury Howell ( grocery store owner ), Wm Treadwell ( druggist ), Asa Grayey( physician ). In 1861 Thanasia gained its present water system when one company supplied all homes with water from three wells located near what is now First Street South between Highways 61st - 63rd Streets West; however during this time there were no public schools in town so school board members went about finding private donors to build schools necessary for students grades K through 8th grade although some Kindergarten thru 2nd Grade classes were also conducted from older buildings not currently used such as an old Female Academy building once used by Teachers College Of Tennessee Department Of Educationbelieved to be built between 1830s - 1840s This building still stands vacant today across from First Baptist Church off State Road 421 South just east of Interstate 65
